Duties and Responsibilities:  The current name for an ancient system of health care from China. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is based on a concept of balanced or vital energy that is believed to flow throughout the body. Qi is proposed to regulate a person's spiritual, emotional, mental, and physical balance and to be influenced by the opposing forces of yin (negative energy) and yang (positive energy). Disease is proposed to result from the flow of qi being disrupted and yin and yang becoming imbalanced. Among the components of TCM are herbal and nutritional therapy, restorative physical exercises, meditation, acupuncture, and remedial massage.

Education: It is important for students to attend a school that has received either pre-accreditation or full accreditation status with the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM). ACAOM is the only national organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education for the accreditation of AOM schools and programs in the U.S. A school’s candidacy or accreditation status with ACAOM represents the highest level of AOM institutional or programmatic quality assurance available in the U.S. today.
